Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President, has spoken out against the recent electricity tariff hike, warning that it will bring additional challenges to Nigerians already grappling with the removal of petrol subsidies and the depreciation of the naira.
He expressed concern that the government raised electricity tariffs without considering the impact on citizens, who are still reeling from the effects of previous economic reforms.
The removal of electricity subsidies for Band A consumers, which make up about 15% of total users, has resulted in a 240% increase, with consumers now paying N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from N68/kWh.
Atiku criticized the lack of notice and post-reform plans to alleviate the burden on citizens, stating that the government’s reforms lack a human face and risk pushing the economy into further crisis.
He called for a reassessment of the privatization of the power sector that led to the establishment of Distribution Companies (DISCOs), suggesting that the root causes of inefficiencies in the sector be addressed before implementing further reforms.
Meanwhile, several states, including Lagos and Kano, are preparing to generate their own electricity in compliance with the Electricity Act 2023, amid growing discontent over the tariff hike.
Various groups, including the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and civil society organizations, have criticized the hike, warning of its negative impact on Nigerians.
