Electricity Workers Oppose Tariff Increase, Threaten Strike

The National Union of Electricity Employees is calling for a rollback of the recent electricity tariff hike, expressing concerns over its impact on consumers. In a statement, the union’s president, Mr. Adebiyi Adeyeye, warned of potential strike action if the hike is not reversed.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission raised tariffs for customers receiving 20 hours of daily power supply, resulting in a significant increase in costs. Adeyeye highlighted the disproportionate burden this places on those reliant on electricity for their daily needs, particularly affecting the less privileged.

Drawing parallels with other countries, Adeyeye argued for government subsidies on electricity, citing examples from advanced nations like Germany and the United States. He emphasized the need to prioritize the economic well-being of Nigerian workers and urged collective action to challenge the decision.

The NUEE condemns the tariff hike and demands immediate action for its reversal. Failure to address this issue may lead to strong measures, including the withdrawal of members involved in implementing the new tariffs. The union calls upon all Nigerians to join in advocating for fair treatment and equitable access to electricity.
