EFCC Denies Reports Clearing Betta Edu of ₦30 Billion Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the recovery of ₦32.7 billion and $445,000 from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development. The commission disclosed this while addressing speculations about its ongoing investigations into alleged financial misappropriation in the ministry.

The latest report from the EFCC contradicts recent news from certain journalists, suggesting that Betta Edu was cleared of allegations of diverting ₦30 billion to private accounts.

According to the EFCC spokesperson, the recoveries were made following the invitation of past and suspended officials of the ministry for questioning. The EFCC emphasized that its investigations are not targeting individuals but rather a system and network of fraudulent activities.

Furthermore, the commission stated that investigations have uncovered fraudulent practices related to COVID-19 funds, the World Bank loan, and the Abacha recovered loot allocated to the ministry for poverty alleviation. Several interdicted and suspended officials have been linked to these alleged financial malfeasances.

The EFCC also highlighted its efforts against Naira abuse and the dollarization of the economy, appreciating the public’s support and involvement in reporting such activities. It reiterated its commitment to prosecuting anyone found involved in the abuse of the Naira.

Regarding the ongoing investigations, the EFCC noted that it is probing 50 bank accounts and has so far recovered ₦30 billion. The commission called for unity in the fight against corruption, urging Nigerians to support its efforts and hold corrupt individuals accountable.
