Fed Govt Paying Higher Fuel Subsidy Costs Than Previously – el-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has pointed out that the Federal Government is now spending more on fuel subsidy than it did before.

El-Rufai made this observation while addressing journalists after presenting the lead paper at a capacity-building workshop on Policy Implementation and Human Resource Management for political appointees in Maiduguri.

He stated, “The federal government is currently subsidizing fuel, a fact not widely known.”

El-Rufai commended the policy, asserting, “It’s the right policy. I’ve always advocated for the removal of oil subsidy. However, during implementation, the government found it necessary to reinstate the subsidy, which now costs even more than before.”

He emphasized the importance of pragmatism in leadership, noting that policies may need adjustments based on practical realities.

Furthermore, el-Rufai cautioned against premature judgment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stressing that leadership is an ongoing process that requires time to evaluate.

He urged Nigerians to pray for their leaders for divine guidance.

Tinubu had announced the removal of fuel subsidy on his inauguration day, citing the unsustainable nature of the subsidy and its diversion into private pockets instead of public welfare sectors like healthcare, education, housing, and national security.
