TCN Restores National Grid Following Fire Incident at Afam Power Station

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the full restoration of the national grid following a fire incident at the Afam power generating station in Rivers on Monday.

Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, confirmed in Abuja that the fire caused a partial disturbance of the grid.

“The fire, which broke out at the Afam V 330kv bus bar coupler around 2:41 a.m., led to the tripping of two units, Afam III and Afam VI,” Mbah stated.

This resulted in an immediate loss of generation capacity of 25 MW and 305 MW respectively, destabilizing the grid and causing a partial collapse.

“The affected section of the grid has been fully restored and stabilized,” she added.

Mbah further explained that during the incident, the Ibom Power plant was isolated from the national grid and supplied power to parts of the Port Harcourt region, thereby mitigating the impact of the system disturbance.

“TCN reaffirms its commitment to enhancing the resilience and reliability of the national grid and pledges to continue investing in measures to strengthen the grid infrastructure,” Mbah assured.
