Fuel scarcity has reached a critical point in Kaduna, with residents facing the daunting reality of purchasing fuel for as much as N1,100 per liter from black market vendors. The dire situation has left many commuters stranded, unable to reach their workplaces and essential destinations, as the availability of fuel dwindles across the state. Amidst this crisis, only a handful of commercial operators are still providing transportation services.
Most filling stations have ceased dispensing fuel altogether, while the few that still have stock have raised prices significantly, ranging from N750 to N810 per liter. Despite the steep hike, long queues persist at these stations, exacerbating the frustration of motorists. Mohammed Amin, a Kaduna resident, shared his experience of purchasing two liters of fuel for a staggering N2,200 and contemplated abandoning his vehicle in favor of public transportation due to the ongoing fuel scarcity.
Additionally, commercial operators are exploiting the situation by raising fares, further burdening commuters. Amina Isa recounted her ordeal of waiting for three hours without finding a ride, only to be charged triple the usual fare by a tricycle operator. Similarly, Moses Joseph and Mrs. Anna Yohanna shared their experiences of being charged inflated fares for their respective journeys, highlighting the widespread impact of the fuel scarcity on transportation costs in Kaduna.
