The Federal Government announced on Tuesday its decision to implement significant salary increases for civil servants, marking a substantial boost in income across various consolidated salary structures. This move, endorsed by the government, reflects a commitment to enhancing the welfare of public sector employees.
In a statement released by Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, it was disclosed that the salary increments of 25% and 35% will come into effect from January 1, 2024. This decision aims to address the evolving economic landscape and ensure fair compensation for civil servants who play pivotal roles in the nation’s development.
The approved augmentation applies to a range of consolidated salary structures, including the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure, Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, Consolidated Police Salary Structure, Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure, Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure, and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure.
Furthermore, retirees enrolled in the Defined Benefits Scheme within these structures will also benefit from an increase in pension, rising from 20% to 28%, commencing on the same date.
It’s worth noting that this latest adjustment builds upon previous salary increments implemented by the Federal Government, particularly within sectors vital to national progress such as tertiary education and health.
This broader initiative encompassed structures like the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure, Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure, Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure.
