The Federal Government has given the green light for a 25% to 35% hike in the salary structures of police officers, armed forces personnel, and other public servants.
This announcement came on Tuesday via the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, with the increase retroactively effective from January 1, 2024.
Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press for NSIWC, stated in a released statement that the approved raise ranges from 25% to 35% for civil servants across six consolidated salary structures.
These structures encompass various sectors, including the police, armed forces, and intelligence community.
Already, employees in tertiary education and healthcare had seen salary increases under different salary structures, such as the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure and the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.
The latest adjustments also extend to pensioners, with increases ranging from 20% to 28% for pensioners on the Defined Benefits Scheme under the mentioned salary structures.
Prior to 2024, there had been calls from Nigerian civil servants for salary hikes, with negotiations settling on a range of increases between 25% and 35%, instead of the initially proposed 40%.
Simultaneously, Nigerian labor unions are advocating for a substantial increase in the minimum wage, with ongoing negotiations considering factors like inflation and the cost of living.
