Gombe NLC Deems ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Inadequate, Not a Living Wage

Yusuf Aish, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Gombe State, has called for the full implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage, stating that the recent increase to N70,000 announced by the Edo State Government is merely a gesture and falls short of a living wage.

Aish made these comments during an interview with journalists following the May Day celebration, themed “People First,” held at Pantami Stadium.

He emphasized the importance of implementing the remaining N30,000 minimum wage, noting disparities in its implementation across various sectors. Aish also highlighted the need for tax waivers until the full implementation of the minimum wage, especially in the local government sector.

Aish stressed that the focus should now shift from minimum wage to a living wage, considering the challenging economic realities faced by workers. He called on the government to prioritize human development to curb insecurity and social vices.

In response to the Edo State Government’s approval of the N70,000 minimum wage, Aish noted that while it was a positive step, it still falls short of a living wage. He emphasized the need for a national discussion on minimum wage, urging the incoming administration to prioritize workers’ welfare.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, represented by Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Jatau, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to workers’ welfare, citing the award received from the Trade Union Congress for being the Most Friendly Labour State in 2023.
