BREAKING: ASUU University of Abuja Commences Indefinite Strike

The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has initiated an indefinite strike to address critical issues concerning the union.

This decision was ratified during a congress held at the Permanent Site of the institution, where members voted in favor of the strike.

Tensions have escalated between the UniAbuja ASUU and both the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, primarily revolving around the procedures for appointing a new VC.

A contentious advertorial published in a national daily on March 15, 2024, seeking a successor for Na’Allah, triggered the dispute.

Rejecting the ad as “illegal” and unauthorized by the governing council, ASUU members emphasized that according to the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 as amended; 2003 and 2012 (Section 3, subsections 1 and 2), only the governing council has the mandate to advertise the VC position when vacant.

Sylvanus Ugoh, Chairman of UniAbuja ASUU, reiterated this stance, emphasizing that no other entity or individual has the legal authority to initiate the appointment process for a new VC.

The union’s stance signals a firm stand against perceived procedural irregularities, underscoring their commitment to upholding due process within the institution.
