The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) is urging both Organised Labour and governors to refrain from escalating tensions and await the Tripartite Committee’s conclusion on the National Minimum Wage.
Adewale Smatt Oyerinde, the Director-General (DG) of NECA, emphasized the need for constructive dialogue rather than public disputes. Oyerinde highlighted the ongoing delays in the Tripartite Committee’s proceedings and expressed concern over recent meeting adjournments.
NECA stressed the importance of promptly reconvening the Tripartite Committee to avoid further unrest and foster trust among stakeholders. Additionally, NECA supported the idea of a new National Minimum Wage, noting its potential to stimulate economic activity and enhance business performance.
Oyerinde emphasized the necessity of aligning any wage increase with international labor standards, particularly those outlined in the International Labour Organization’s Minimum Wage Fixing Convention of 1970. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach considering workers’ needs, economic factors, productivity levels, and the sustainability of enterprises.
