ASUU Prepares for Nationwide Strike Over Unresolved Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike to protest the Nigerian government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities.

During a briefing at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed frustration over the absence of governing councils in all federal universities and other unresolved issues.

Prof. Osodeke noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has had ample time to address the union’s demands.

The governing councils were dissolved by the government last May, leaving the universities without proper oversight. Additionally, ASUU criticized the recent salary increments—35 percent for professors and 25 percent for other university academics—as insufficient and described them as a temporary wage award that could be revoked by the government at any time.

ASUU’s move to strike underscores the ongoing tensions between the union and the government over the administration and funding of Nigeria’s federal universities.
