Eight Political Parties Converge in Kaduna Ahead of 2027

In preparation for the 2027 general elections, eight political parties gathered in Kaduna on Thursday to strategize on dislodging the governing All Progressives Congress (APC). The summit, convened by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and themed “Solid Political Party Structure Critical to the Sustainability of the Democratic Process,” took place at Arewa House, Kaduna.

The political parties in attendance included the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), KOWA Party, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

Lawal Nalado, chairman of the summit and also head of IPAC, highlighted the severe economic hardship faced by Nigerians. He clarified that the summit was not intended to form a merger or coalition but to discuss national problems and possible solutions. Nalado criticized the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that it had exacerbated rather than solved Nigeria’s issues.

Nalado emphasized the need for opposition parties to mobilize voters at the grassroots level, educating them that politics should be about electing the right candidates rather than being influenced by money, religion, or ethnicity.

Falalu Bello, National Chairman of the PRP, echoed the call for effective voter mobilization, stating that fielding credible candidates alone would not suffice to win elections. Represented by Prof. Sule Muhammad, Bello pointed out the challenges facing opposition parties, including inadequate resources, lack of internal democracy, poor transparency, and interference from the ruling party.

Ahmed Tujjani, chairman of the ADC and IPAC in Kaduna State, stated that the summit aimed to address socio-economic and political issues and find realistic solutions. He reiterated that the gathering was not for forming a merger but for discussing common problems and suggesting ways to tackle them.

Tujjani announced that a communique would be released the following day, summarizing the discussions and providing a mini working document for addressing issues ahead of the 2027 elections. He stressed the importance of early preparation, reflecting the proverb that a good Friday can be predicted from Wednesday.

The summit also included youth groups and emphasized the need for political parties to keep Nigerians informed and engaged to maintain citizens’ loyalty ahead of the next general election.
