Kano Hisbah Imposes Ban on Male DJs at Women’s Social Gatherings

The Kano State Hisbah Board, known as the Sharia Police, has prohibited male Disc Jockeys from performing at events primarily attended by women across the state.

This decision was announced by the Commander General of the Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, during a recent meeting with representatives of DJs in the state.

Sheikh Daurawa stated, “As an Islamic state, it is unacceptable for us to allow the indiscriminate mixing of males and females at the same event. This act can promote and spread immorality.”

He clarified that only women would henceforth be allowed to officiate at women’s gatherings, emphasizing that the prohibition aims to prevent the mixing of men and women during public events, due to religious and moral concerns.

The Sheikh stressed the importance of upholding standards that discourage actions deemed contrary to Islamic tenets and teachings.

Jamil Mabai, a journalist with Trust TV, has recounted his detention by the Katsina State Hisbah Corps while on official duty at their office.

Mabai explained that he had visited the corps headquarters for a follow-up interview with the Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Akilu, regarding an incident involving their officers.

He intended to interview Akilu about the death of a resident, Mallam Gambo, who was shot by an officer of the Community Watch Corps. According to Mabai, the shooting occurred while Hisbah officials were attempting to shut down a wedding with a DJ, and the shots were fired by a Community Watch Corps operative assigned to defend communities against bandit attacks.

Upon arriving at the Hisbah headquarters for the scheduled interview, Mabai was informed that the PRO was unavailable. Unknown to him, this was a setup to detain him. While waiting, Hisbah officers approached, detained him, and confiscated his phone, claiming their actions were an “order from above.”
