The Defence Headquarters on Thursday declared Halilu Buzu, a terrorist leader from the Republic of Niger, wanted for his involvement in killings in Zamfara State.
Buzu, who resides in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State, is implicated in illegal gold mining and is a prominent cattle rustler and arms supplier. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this during a bi-weekly briefing on recent military operations.
Buba stated, “Troops are actively engaged in various operations nationwide, focused on dismantling both the military capabilities and morale of terrorists and their associates. We are targeting senior terrorist leaders who coordinate attacks against troops and citizens. Among these targets is Halilu Buzu.”
Buzu operates from Subbubu Forest in Zamfara State, with his camp and illegal gold mine located at Kawayi in Anka LGA. He is known for his involvement in cattle rustling, illegal mining, and arms trafficking. Recently, his followers killed 19 villagers at Farar Kasa, making him a high-value target.
Buba added, “Halilu is a major arms supplier, trusted by dealers for sourcing arms from Libya. When pressured by troops, he often flees to Niger for refuge. We are working through appropriate channels to ensure he is apprehended and held accountable for his crimes.”
During the past week, troops killed 227 terrorists, bandits, and other criminals, arrested 529 suspects, rescued 253 hostages, and recovered numerous weapons. They also destroyed various illegal structures and equipment used for criminal activities, and prevented oil theft amounting to over N1.3 billion in the Niger Delta.
Recovered items included 89 AK47 rifles, 40 locally fabricated guns, 59 dane guns, 250kg bombs, and other assorted weapons and ammunition. Troops are determined to eliminate terrorist threats and ensure national security.
Major General Buba commended the troops for their dedication and sacrifices, emphasizing their relentless pursuit to bring an end to terrorist activities in the nation.
