The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged anti-graft agencies to follow due process in their anti-corruption investigations. The advocacy group emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of the Rule of Law, particularly in the prosecution of the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle.
During a peaceful assembly at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, stressed the need for all anti-corruption bodies to comply fully with constitutional principles.
Onwubiko stated, “We are compelled to address the recent developments regarding the protests against the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, MON. The protests, which appear to be sponsored, have reached a disturbing level and are now a cause for serious concern. While the right to peaceful assembly and free speech is fundamental, these rights should not be exercised in a manner that disturbs public peace and security.”
He acknowledged the vital role of the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies in combating corruption, noting, “Without the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies, corruption would be rampant in the country. We commend their efforts but stress the importance of allowing these bodies to operate within the bounds of the law.”
At the event, which was attended by various civil rights and democracy supporters, Onwubiko presented a letter to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Olanipekun Olukayode. The letter reiterated HURIWA’s concerns about the protests and the necessity for lawful procedures in anti-corruption efforts.
