BREAKING: Labour Reduces Minimum Wage Demand in Negotiations with FG

In a bid to expedite the ongoing negotiations on a new national minimum wage, the Organized Labour at the Tripartite Committee meeting has reduced its demand from ₦615,000 to ₦500,000.

Sources at the meeting reported that the government remains adamant about a ₦54,000 minimum wage, citing insufficient funds and the private sector’s inability to meet higher demands. The private sector has slightly increased its offer from ₦54,000 to ₦57,000.

According to a source, “The government acknowledges that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is presenting evidence-based arguments. However, they point out that eight states are either not paying or not fully implementing the 2019 minimum wage.”

The source further stated, “The government is emphasizing the lack of available funds and the private sector’s financial constraints.”

Regarding Labour’s concession, the source added, “Labour has been asked to adjust their demands in response to the government’s position. They have complied by reducing their demand to ₦500,000.”

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma attended the meeting, despite not being a committee member. His presence is notable as the six governors on the committee have frequently been absent.
