Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education, describing it as a key enabler of social mobility and opportunities.
Speaking at the combined third and fourth convocation ceremony of the Federal University Gusau, Lawal announced plans to increase the state’s budget allocation for education, aiming to reach the recommended 25-30% as soon as possible.
A statement by Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that the governor also announced a scholarship award for the overall best-graduating student of the university.
“We have allocated a substantial amount of money to the education sector in our 2024 budget and are hopeful to increase the allocation in 2025, 2026, and 2027,” the governor said on Saturday.
Lawal highlighted his administration’s efforts to revitalize the education sector, stating, “We aim to achieve the 25-30% recommended allocation to education as soon as possible. With reasonable allocation to the sector and efficient management of resources, we are optimistic about reviving the education infrastructure, hiring more competent teachers, and training and retraining existing ones.”
“We will also increase enrollment in both primary and post-basic schools through public enlightenment and by creating better learning and teaching environments,” he added.
The governor emphasized that education is free in Zamfara State and expressed his government’s intention to make it compulsory.
“Within our limited resources, we will continue to support the Federal University Gusau. Our objective is to increase educational access and opportunities for all our young people to achieve the heights that education provides,” the statement concluded.
