BREAKING: Labour Declares Indefinite Strike Over Minimum Wage, Electricity Tariff Hike

Organized Labour has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3rd, in response to the federal government’s failure to conclude negotiations on a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

Expressing their disappointment, labour leaders lamented the government’s disregard for the May 1 ultimatum issued to address these pressing issues. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) had previously warned that a nationwide strike would be inevitable if the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage did not meet labour’s expectations.

During a briefing, NLC and TUC leaders expressed regret over the inconveniences the strike might cause Nigerians but emphasized their determination to pursue the cause to its conclusion. They pleaded with the public to understand the necessity of the action, stating, “We apologize for the inconveniences but remain committed to pursuing this cause to its conclusion.”

The labour unions urge the federal government to prioritize the welfare of workers and the general populace by addressing the issues of minimum wage and electricity tariffs promptly. The indefinite strike is seen as a last resort to compel the government to act in the interest of Nigerian workers.
