Nigeria: Obasanjo Advocates for Change in Leadership Generation

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the need for Nigeria to recruit new leaders to take over the mantle of leadership. Speaking at the Africa Methodist Council Heads of Conference Summit and Women’s Movement Leadership Summit in Lagos, Obasanjo highlighted the country’s insecurity, suffering, and hunger, making it a dangerous place.

Obasanjo stressed that effective leadership is crucial to addressing these challenges and creating a better future for all Nigerians. He urged current leaders to wake up to their responsibilities and undertake a re-evaluation of the world.

“How do we re-evaluate the world? What do we do? Jesus Christ himself told us that in this world, we would have trouble,” he said. “I will give you two points. Wake up! We need a new generation of leaders; moral leaders, transformational leaders, and servant leaders. This new generation of leaders will lead by showing love and leading the re-evaluation and transformation.”

Obasanjo further described Nigeria as volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, and dangerous, despite the continent’s vast resources. He pointed out that countries like Japan and Singapore have thrived without natural resources due to effective leadership.

“Leadership in Africa is very important. We can’t create an Africa of hope, prosperity, devoid of oppression and one of security, peace, and where leaders have vision, knowledge, and understanding this way,” he concluded.
