Senate President, Govs Call Urgent Meeting with Labour Leaders to Prevent Strike

In an urgent effort to prevent the upcoming nationwide strike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alongside the Nigeria Governors Forum’s leadership, has called for an emergency meeting with the Organized Labour’s leaders tonight. This development was confirmed by sources close to the matter on Sunday afternoon.

“The Senate President and the Nigeria Governors Forum have summoned a meeting to be held tonight,” a well-informed source revealed.

On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024. The strike follows the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage above ₦60,000.

Joe Ajaero, the NLC President, stated that the strike was a result of unsuccessful negotiations between the government and organized labour.

The government’s final offer of ₦60,000, which was an increase from the previous ₦57,000, was deemed insufficient by the labour unions.

During the negotiations, the labour unions reduced their demand by ₦3,000, bringing the new proposal to ₦494,000 from an initial ₦497,000.

However, the talks reached an impasse as the government stuck to its offer of ₦60,000, prompting the declaration of the indefinite strike.
