The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that the total and indefinite industrial strike action, which began on Monday, is still ongoing.
This announcement comes despite an agreement with the Federal Government to set a new minimum wage above N60,000. The agreement was reached at a meeting on Monday between the NLC, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and federal government representatives.
Updating on the strike status, the NLC stated that the strike will continue until further notice. “Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today, 4th June, we are still on strike,” the NLC declared following the meeting at the residence of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The resolution includes a commitment for a tripartite committee to meet daily for the next week to agree on a new national minimum wage. The labour unions will convene a meeting of their organs immediately to consider this commitment. Additionally, it was agreed that no worker would be victimized as a result of participating in the strike.
