Senate Approves Bill to Enhance Judicial Salaries, Benefits

The Senate approved a bill on Wednesday to enhance the salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits of judicial office holders in Nigeria. This decision followed the adoption of a report from the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters during the plenary session.

Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno), Chairman of the committee, presented the report, noting unanimous support from stakeholders at the public hearing. He emphasized that the bill aligns with the justice sector reform initiative of the current administration and conforms to the Constitution and Senate rules.

Monguno highlighted the urgency of the bill, citing the overdue need for increased judicial remuneration amid current economic challenges and high inflation. The proposed legislation not only increases basic salaries but also addresses unique aspects of the judiciary’s administrative structure.

“The bill, if passed, will ensure appropriate and commensurate remuneration, promoting judicial independence and integrity,” Monguno stated. “Adequate compensation will allow judicial officers to focus on professional development without financial concerns, enhancing their professionalism and decision-making skills. Fair compensation is essential for maintaining public trust in the judiciary’s impartiality.”

He further argued that higher remuneration is crucial for attracting and retaining qualified and experienced professionals with the necessary skills and integrity for judicial roles. Additionally, the bill aims to provide financial security for retired judicial officers, ensuring their comfort after years of dedicated service.

The proposed salary increases have been included in the 2024 Appropriation Act.
