The Labour unions have rejected the Federal Government’s proposed wages of ₦62,000 and ₦100,000, labeling them as inadequate. The unions have warned that they may resume their nationwide strike if their demand for a ₦250,000 minimum wage is not addressed by Tuesday.
Organised Labour issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government on June 4, 2024, which will expire at midnight on June 11, 2024. If the Federal Government and the National Assembly fail to act on the workers’ demands by the deadline, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will convene to decide on the next steps, potentially resuming the industrial action that was paused last week.
Chris Onyeka, the NLC’s Assistant General Secretary, made this announcement on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief show on Monday. He emphasized that the responsibility now lies with the Federal Government and the National Assembly to address the unions’ demands and enact a National Minimum Wage Act that reflects these requirements.
