The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Aishetu Ndayako.
In his statement, Tunji-Ojo extended his congratulations to Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day. He emphasized the importance of this day as a time to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers. Tunji-Ojo encouraged all Nigerians to work towards ensuring that Nigeria remains a united, secure, peaceful, and indivisible entity.
“As we mark another Democracy Day in the history of our dear country, let us all reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains a united, secured, peaceful, and indivisible entity,” the statement read.
The minister also urged Nigerians to uphold the principles of democratic governance, noting that steadfastness in these principles is crucial for the nation’s progress. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to implementing positive reforms aimed at revitalizing the economy and enhancing national security.
“The minister also called on Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to appreciate the progress that has been made, and look forward to a better future for Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement concluded.
Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 to honor the nation’s journey towards democratic governance and to commemorate the annulled 1993 presidential election, which is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
