Zamfara Gov Expresses Outrage Over Police, Military Attitude to Banditry

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has expressed frustration over the lack of political will to combat banditry in the state and the country. He criticized the police and military for their inadequate response to the banditry crisis, which has resulted in a flourishing kidnapping-for-ransom trade.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, Governor Lawal claimed that the issue could be resolved within two weeks if there were sufficient political will. He attributed the state’s creation of the Community Protection Guards in January to the Federal Government-controlled security agencies’ lackluster performance.

“We, as governors, don’t have control over the military or the police. Often, we feel helpless and frustrated. When needed, these security agents are either unavailable or constrained by specific instructions,” he stated.

The governor emphasized that they know who the bandits are and where they reside, but efforts are undermined by a lack of political resolve and unauthorized negotiations with bandits. He condemned past administrations’ negotiations with bandits, stating they have only enriched the criminals without yielding positive results.

Governor Lawal also highlighted Zamfara State’s critical role in the broader banditry issue in northern Nigeria. “Addressing the banditry in Zamfara would resolve over 90% of the issues in northern Nigeria,” he asserted.

In discussions with President Bola Tinubu, Governor Lawal raised concerns about internal saboteurs hindering security efforts. He noted the President’s assurance that steps would be taken to address these challenges.

Regarding state security outfits, Lawal pointed out that their effectiveness is limited by the lack of licenses for assault rifles and superior weapons. He expressed optimism that with constitutional support, these outfits could significantly enhance security operations.
