Corps Members’ Wellbeing Is Non-Negotiable, Says NYSC DG

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig Gen YD Ahmed, has reaffirmed that the welfare of corps members is non-negotiable.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 2024 NYSC Information and Public Relations Officers’ Training Workshop, Ahmed emphasized the scheme’s commitment to the security and well-being of its members. He underscored the NYSC’s proactive measures in ensuring the safety and welfare of corps members.

Ahmed also dismissed calls for the dissolution of the NYSC, arguing that critics have not experienced its benefits. He pointed out the scheme’s significant contributions to agriculture, health, education, and security consciousness.

“As the Director General of NYSC, I assure you that we are always ready to protect the welfare of corps members. We prioritize their security and well-being,” Ahmed stated. “Those advocating for the scrapping of NYSC have not participated in the scheme. We are very active in agriculture with NYSC farms in various locations, including Kwali in Abuja, Abakaliki in Ebonyi, and Bauchi.”

In a related development, the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Eddy Megwa, announced his retirement after 34 years of service. He expressed gratitude to the NYSC DG, top management, and stakeholders for their support during his tenure. Megwa highlighted his achievements, including fostering robust media engagement and establishing NYSC Radio and Television Stations.

The workshop, themed ‘Retooling Public Relations Officers for Modern Corporate Image Management,’ aims to enhance PR officers’ skills in managing the scheme’s image. Additionally, the NYSC unveiled a newly-established media department to boost its public relations efforts.
