Sallah: Buhari Sounds Alarm on Population Growth, Calls for Food Security

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to prioritize food self-sufficiency and cautioned about the potential dangers of uncontrolled population growth.

Speaking to journalists after observing Eid prayers in his hometown of Daura, the two-time president emphasized the need for the nation to remain vigilant about its food security and demographic trends.

President Buhari expressed his satisfaction with the increasing number of Nigerians engaging in agriculture, noting that this trend has led to lower food prices and enhanced national food security. Nevertheless, he warned that the country’s progress could be jeopardized by unchecked population growth, which he believes would pose significant challenges for future generations.

“I use this occasion to appeal to all citizens to make Nigeria self-reliant. Let us grow our own food. We have shown that we can do it. This is not the time to relent when we see prices going up,” Buhari stated. “Let us buy what is produced in the country. The foundation of a prosperous and stable country has been laid by successive governments, and I encourage our youth, in particular, to continue to play an active role in various nation-building efforts.”

The former president urged the youth to learn about the nation’s founding fathers and notable personalities from their regions, drawing inspiration from their legacies. He emphasized the importance of supporting one another and fostering a spirit of unity and brotherhood, especially during the Sallah celebration.

Buhari also lauded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its significant role in promoting national unity. He described the NYSC as one of the greatest achievements of General Yakubu Gowon’s administration and called for its continued strengthening to ensure it remains a cornerstone of national cohesion.

In his message, Buhari reiterated the critical need for Nigerians to embrace self-sufficiency, community support, and active participation in building a resilient and prosperous nation.
