The Federal Government has denied renaming the Murtala Muhammed Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Wole Soyinka Expressway.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the renaming of the expressway was never contemplated by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.
In a statement issued by his special assistant on media, Rabiu Ibrahim, on Monday, June 17, the minister clarified that the rumors circulating about the renaming of the expressway are false.
He explained that on June 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road in the FCT, codenamed Arterial Road N20, which links the existing Outer Northern Expressway (also known as Murtala Muhammed Expressway) to the Northern Parkway (also called Ahmadu Bello Way).
The Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, proposed naming the new road after Prof Wole Soyinka during the inauguration, and the President agreed.
Therefore, it is the Arterial Road N20 that has been named after Prof Soyinka, not the Murtala Muhammed Expressway, which remains unchanged.
The government urged all citizens to disregard any misinformation regarding the renaming of the Murtala Muhammed Expressway, emphasizing that the report is entirely false.
