A soldier serving under the 14 Brigade Headquarters at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barrack in Ohafia, Abia State, has committed suicide. The soldier, Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Vitalis from Okpuala in Ngor-Okpuala, Imo State, shot himself in front of the Forward Operation Base (FOB) gate at Ngwa High School, Abayi, Osisioma.
The motive behind the suicide is unknown as no note was left. Sources within state security indicated that a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the cause, warning against premature conclusions.
There were no previous reports of domestic violence or disciplinary issues involving CSM Vitalis. It was reported that he had been missing for two weeks before returning to the camp and taking his life, surprising his colleagues. He was due to retire in October.
Attempts to contact the Army Public Relations Officer, Lt. Prince Innocent Omale, for comment were unsuccessful.
