New Minimum Wage: Akwa Ibom Reiterates Commitment to Implementation

The Akwa Ibom Government has reiterated its commitment to implementing the new minimum wage once the ongoing negotiations between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government are concluded.

Speaking during a press briefing yesterday as part of the activities marking the 2024 Public Service Week, themed “Stay Forward Looking, Make a Difference,” Mr. Effiong Essien, the Head of Civil Service in the state, highlighted the administration’s dedication to the welfare of workers.

Under Governor Umo Eno’s leadership, the state has allocated over N18 billion in the past year for the settlement of outstanding pensions, gratuities, and leave grants, demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing the needs of both serving and retired employees.

Essien emphasized the government’s readiness to adjust pensions to mitigate the impact of economic challenges on retirees, while also affirming the state’s preparedness to implement the new minimum wage pending the conclusion of negotiations between relevant parties.

Encouraging a culture of commitment and productivity among public servants, the Head of Service announced the procurement of 150 housing units to be distributed free to workers in grades 1 to 8, further enhancing their welfare.

Essien underscored the vital role of the public service sector in driving government policies and national development, emphasizing its significance as the cornerstone of governance and societal progress.
