In a recent interview, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal discussed the persistent insecurity plaguing his state, despite numerous efforts to address it. Governor Lawal pointed out that Zamfara has been a hotspot for banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling for the past twelve years. He expressed frustration over the ongoing violence, noting the challenges in resolving it due to complex socio-political dynamics and lack of political will.
Governor Lawal emphasized that while traditional security agencies have been overwhelmed and sometimes unresponsive, his administration has taken proactive measures. These include establishing the Community Protection Guard, which has recruited over 2,500 personnel from local communities to assist in security operations. He highlighted the effectiveness of these local forces, given their familiarity with the terrain and local populace.
However, Governor Lawal lamented that political interference often hampers security efforts. He mentioned instances where unauthorized negotiations with bandits have undermined state actions. Despite raising these concerns with President Bola Tinubu, Lawal noted that a comprehensive and coordinated federal response is still lacking.
On other fronts, Governor Lawal addressed the dire state of education in Zamfara, where many students had been unable to sit for national exams due to unpaid fees. His administration has settled significant debts to examination bodies and is now focusing on rebuilding educational infrastructure across the state.
Furthermore, Lawal spoke on the economic challenges, particularly illegal mining activities, which continue despite bans. He stressed the need for formal investment in the mining sector to harness Zamfara’s rich mineral resources legally and beneficially.
Despite these hurdles, Governor Lawal remains committed to improving security, education, and economic development in Zamfara. He called for greater political will and support from federal authorities to eradicate banditry and foster sustainable development in the region.
