Zamfara Govt to Transform YB Specialist into University Teaching Hospital

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara has announced plans to transform the Specialist Hospital in Gusau into a University Teaching Hospital. This significant upgrade was revealed in a statement by Suleiman Idris, the governor’s media aide, on Friday.

Governor Lawal made this announcement during the inauguration of the facility’s upgrade, officially named the ‘Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital’ in Gusau. The governor emphasized that this transformation will elevate the hospital to the status of a teaching hospital affiliated with Zamfara University.

The governor highlighted the benefits of this upgrade, noting that it would enhance the referral system for specialized care, bolster the healthcare workforce, and improve service quality, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for the community.

“This project is a follow-up to our declaration of a state of emergency in the state’s health sector, following a similar declaration in education,” Mr. Lawal stated. He explained that the initiative was driven by the substantial challenges inherited by his administration in the healthcare sector.

Governor Lawal pointed out that many of the hospital’s structures are in disrepair, underscoring the urgent need for attention. He also noted the hospital’s inadequate laboratory facilities, which hinder the staff’s ability to conduct essential diagnostic procedures effectively.

The governor assured that the remodelling project aims to safeguard the health and well-being of both residents and healthcare service providers. The comprehensive upgrade will include new constructions, expansions, and upgrades of existing structures. Additionally, the project will see the completion of doctors’ quarters, the installation of modern laboratory imaging facilities, and the implementation of a complete hospital information management system.

This transformation of the Specialist Hospital into a University Teaching Hospital marks a significant milestone in Zamfara’s efforts to improve its healthcare infrastructure and services.
