Orji Kalu Calls for Minimum Wage Increase, ₦62,000 “Can’t Do Anything”

Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for the federal government to set the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers above ₦62,000.

The former Governor suggested that President Bola Tinubu should raise the minimum wage to ₦90,000, citing the need for better treatment of civil servants and the lack of wage increases over the past five years despite rising inflation.

Kalu acknowledged President Tinubu’s accomplishments in certain economic areas but emphasized the pressing issue of hunger and the need for improved food production.

In an interview with Channels Television, Kalu remarked: “The president has done well in some areas, but there is significant room for improvement in others. I speak candidly and support the truth.

“While President Tinubu has achieved success in economic and monetary policies, the fiscal policies, particularly in food production, need attention. People are hungry, and we must focus on growing more food.”

Kalu advocated for a ₦90,000 minimum wage and local government autonomy. “Local governments should receive their funds directly. ₦62,000 is inadequate. I propose ₦90,000 because we haven’t raised the minimum wage in five years. Civil servants deserve better treatment,” he stated.
