Atiku Calls for Constitutional Reforms to Safeguard Traditional Institutions

In response to the ongoing emirate tussle in Kano and Sokoto states, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for significant constitutional reforms to safeguard the integrity and stability of traditional institutions. He emphasized the growing trend of state governments exerting undue influence over the enthronement of traditional rulers, which he sees as a destabilizing factor for communities.

Atiku highlighted that while traditional rulership falls under the purview of state governments through local authorities, these institutions play a critical role in governance and must be protected from state interference. “Traditional institutions constitute a component of our governance structure,” Atiku noted, “and thus, must be shielded from the arbitrariness of state governments that threaten their stability.”

He expressed concern that the disruption of traditional ascension processes could lead to instability, undermining peace and order within communities. Despite the current constitutional framework not recognizing traditional institutions, Atiku pointed out their substantial contributions to the economic, social, and security aspects of their domains.

Reflecting on history, Atiku reminded that traditional institutions were effective governance structures before colonial rule and should be preserved rather than dismantled. He advocated for constitutional amendments that would officially recognize these institutions and delineate their responsibilities.

“This reform is crucial, particularly in our collective efforts to combat terrorism and other security challenges at the local level,” Atiku stated. He urged state governors to respect the roles of traditional rulers, noting that the customs and traditions they uphold are integral to Nigeria’s heritage.
