Fubara to Senators: “I’m Defending Rivers Against Predators”, Shows them Strategy

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasized that he is not engaging in conflict but is instead defending the state against threats and protecting the interests of Rivers State supporters.

This statement comes in light of a failed attempt to detonate an explosive device at the Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt, which he claims was a deliberate effort to advocate for a state of emergency by those seeking to destabilize the state.

Governor Fubara shared these remarks during a courtesy visit from the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation, led by its Chairman, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The Governor detailed how some youths were allegedly hired to protest for the extension of the tenure of former local government chairmen, who had completed their three-year terms.

He stated that the protesters and their sponsors were aware of the presence of National Assembly members at the Hotel Presidential, prompting an attempt to plant an explosive device to justify a call for a state of emergency.

Fubara explained, “They knew you were in the State and planned to detonate dynamite at the Hotel Presidential. Fortunately, the attempt failed, and the individual involved was injured in the process.”

He expressed frustration with the perceived inaction of the law regarding tenure extension, which has not been an issue elsewhere in the country. He reiterated his stance of defending the state against predators and ensuring the protection of its supporters.

Governor Fubara urged the Senate Committee to consider the interests of Rivers State in their privatization efforts, highlighting the importance of the state having stakes in companies to ensure their viability and protection.

In his address, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu praised Governor Fubara for his dedication to peace and quality governance. He called on all parties to prioritize peace and the state’s interests above personal conflicts, commending the Governor for his efforts in maintaining stability and promoting economic growth.

Kalu also pledged the committee’s cooperation with the state government to achieve goals beneficial to all Nigerians.
