The Sokoto State House of Assembly’s Committee on Local Government and Community Development has scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, 2nd July, 2024, at 2:30 pm in the Mini Chamber of the Assembly Complex. The hearing will discuss the proposed amendment to the Sokoto Sultanate Council Law.
This proposed legislation has sparked significant controversy, with many Muslims and Islamic organizations expressing strong opposition, claiming it aims to curtail the Sultan’s power.
However, the state government has clarified that the proposed law does not target the Sultan of Sokoto’s authority. Instead, it addresses the roles of kingmakers, district heads, and village heads. The government emphasized that the law includes no provision for the dethronement of the Sultan or any traditional ruler, except through a recommendation from the Sultan and the approval of the Executive Governor.
The 10th Sokoto State House of Assembly Committee, chaired by Hon. Sa’idu N. Ibrahim (Sabon Birni South), convened on Wednesday, 26th June, 2024, to discuss the bill. The committee resolved to hold a public hearing to gather input from the general public and dispel any misinformation circulating in the media.
The public hearing aims to provide transparency and allow citizens to voice their opinions on the bill, ensuring that any amendments serve the best interests of Sokoto State. The hearing is open to all, and the committee encourages public participation to facilitate an inclusive legislative process.
