Emirship Tussle: Ganduje Appointed Bayero as Emir for Political Gains – NNPP

Amid controversies surrounding the Kano Emirate tussle, Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Hashimu Dungurawa, has alleged that the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four other first-class Emirs were appointed by the former administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for political gains ahead of the 2023 elections.

Dungurawa made these remarks while speaking to journalists in his office. He claimed that the appointments were a strategic move meant to expire with Ganduje’s tenure, which ended following the governor’s electoral defeat.

The NNPP leader emphasized that the Emirs held a status equivalent to appointed Commissioners under Ganduje’s administration. He argued that it was in the public interest for them to cease being recognized after the former governor’s tenure ended.

“The five first-class Emirs we met on the throne were essentially commissioners appointed by Ganduje to help him win elections. They remained until 2023, and when they lost, their tenure ended,” Dungurawa said.

He further stated, “Once Ganduje lost the elections and stepped down as Governor of Kano State, these Emirs should have vacated their seats since none of them occupied the Emir of Kano’s position after Muhammadu Sanusi II was removed.”

Dungurawa suggested that the decision to relieve the Emirs of their traditional status was driven by public demand concerning the vacant Emir of Kano position. He added that Governor Abba Yusuf responded to public outcry by reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi II, who had been previously dethroned. The state lawmakers repealed the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019, and the Governor signed it into law.

He also praised Justice A. Liman for professionally handling the legal issues brought before him.

Regarding the flag hoisting at the Nassarawa mini palace, Dungurawa clarified, “The Nassarawa mini palace is a guest house for the Emir. It’s part of the Kano Emirate, and the Special Adviser to the Emir of Kano is diligently overseeing the mausoleum where their forefathers are buried.”
