Former Senator Shehu Sani claims that the demand for a new national minimum wage in Nigeria has stalled. After a tripartite meeting on June 10, 2024, involving the government, private sector, and labor unions, no progress has been made.
The government and private sector proposed ₦62,000 as the new minimum wage, which labor unions rejected, demanding ₦250,000 instead. The federal executive council postponed a decision on June 25, citing the need for wider consultations.
The governors, in a meeting on June 26, assured ongoing negotiations for better wages without any concrete decision. Sani commented that the issue seems to have “entered voicemail.”
