Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has raised concerns about the resurgence of terrorism in the North East.
He condemned the recent bomb attacks in Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State, which resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people and injuries to many others on Saturday.
In a statement issued via his X handle on Sunday, Atiku described the suicide attacks as tragic and unacceptable, emphasizing the growing worry over these incidents.
The former Vice President criticized the Tinubu administration, asserting that the successes achieved in the fight against insurgency are being undone due to the government’s inadequate approach to combating terrorists.
Atiku stated, “It is a sad development that the incidents of terrorism are resurfacing and, indeed, spreading in the North-East. The reported attack by suicide bombers at a wedding reception, funeral procession, and a hospital on Saturday stands condemned. It is unfortunate that much of the progress made against Boko Haram is being reversed, mainly due to the government’s lacklustre stance on maintaining control over the frontline.”
He urged the federal government to ensure the North East does not fall back into the grip of terrorists and extreme violence.
“My condolences go to the families of the victims of these attacks, and it is my prayer that God grants a peaceful repose to the souls of the departed,” he added.
