Commissioner Asserts Govt has Legal Power to Divide Katsina Emirate

The Katsina State Commissioner of Information, Bala Salisu Zango, has affirmed the state government’s authority to restructure the Katsina Emirate.

In response to a recent inquiry directed at the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman, regarding the absence of certain district heads from the Eid-el-Kabir Durbar celebration, Zango clarified the government’s position. He emphasized that while the state has not indicated any intention to divide the emirate, it possesses the legal power to do so.

“There has been no statement from the Katsina state government about dividing the emirates,” Zango said. “However, this does not negate the fact that the government has the authority to undertake such actions, as chieftaincy matters fall within its jurisdiction.”

He elaborated that the governor’s decisions on chieftaincy issues are intended to benefit the citizens, reiterating that the current administration has not expressed plans to disintegrate the emirates.

The Commissioner explained that the government sought clarification from the Emir on the absence of district heads, despite the allocation of funds for the event. He refuted any claims of discord between the Governor and the Emir, stating that the query was not intended to target the traditional ruler.

“Our Governor cherishes traditional festivities like the Sallah Durbar. Katsina state has a rich cultural heritage, and the Governor actively seeks to enhance these events by providing support to the Emirate,” Zango told BBC Hausa. “Given the financial support extended to the district heads, their absence warranted an explanation from the Emir.”

Zango added that the government had previously coordinated with both the Emirs of Katsina and Daura, ensuring all preparations and funding were in place for the celebration, thereby justifying the request for an explanation.

The query from Governor Radda to the Katsina Emir sparked mixed reactions, suggesting potential tension between the governor and traditional institutions.
