Kano Emirate Crisis: Judge Threatens to Jail Gov Yusuf Spokesperson

Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano has warned the Spokesperson to Kano State Governor, Sanusi Bature, that he could face jail time for allegedly misrepresenting court judgments. The judge’s warning came after he delivered his judgment on a case related to the Kano State Commission of Inquiry established by Governor Yusuf.

Justice Amobeda expressed frustration over comments made by state government officials, including Bature, which he believed undermined court judgments. The judge stated that while the Governor has immunity, his aides do not, and he would not hesitate to jail anyone who makes unguarded statements against the court’s decisions.

In his ruling, Justice Amobeda also ordered two Kano State High Court judges to resign from their appointments as chairmen of judicial commissions of inquiry set up by Governor Yusuf to investigate his predecessor’s administration. The judges were given a 48-hour deadline to comply.

This development is the latest in a series of legal battles and political tensions in Kano State since Governor Abba Yusuf took office on May 29, 2023. The state has been in the spotlight due to ongoing legal crises, including the Emirate tussle and political violence.
