Federal Government Set to Create Nigerian-Own Blockchain

The Federal Government has announced plans to develop a homegrown blockchain, tentatively named “Nigerium,” to ensure that Nigerian data and that of its citizens remain under local control, rather than being subject to foreign entities.

Kachifu Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), revealed this initiative during a meeting with a delegation from the University of Hertfordshire Law School at NITDA’s headquarters in Abuja.

Abdullahi assured that the development of the blockchain would enhance national security and protect citizens’ data. He encouraged the delegation, led by Chanu Kuppuswamy, to present their research to NITDA’s steering committee for adoption and implementation.

Kuppuswamy emphasized the importance of an indigenous blockchain, arguing that relying on foreign-developed blockchains like Ethereum would subject Nigeria to external control and influence. She suggested that an indigenous blockchain would allow for greater customization and security, tailored to Nigeria’s specific needs.

Dr. Bukola Faturoti and Ademola Soile-Balogun, members of the delegation, supported this view, stressing the need for a blockchain infrastructure that ensures Nigerian laws and interests are prioritized.

Additionally, Dr. Faturoti highlighted the concept of a “data embassy,” which involves hosting Nigerian data on servers in a third-party country under Nigerian law. This approach would provide a safeguard against cyber-attacks and natural disasters.

Balogun Ademola also emphasized the need for synergy among government departments to harmonize blockchain services and ensure interdependency between agencies.

The delegation’s research and recommendations aim to provide a roadmap for the successful implementation of blockchain technology in Nigeria, with a focus on improving public services and securing data.
