Flood Displaces Over 10,000 Households Across 10 LGs in Zamfara – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 10,000 households have been displaced due to a flood that caused extensive damage in 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Zamfara State last week.

In a statement released on Wednesday, NEMA reported that the details emerged after an assessment of the affected areas by its team, led by Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi, the Head of Operations for the Sokoto State office of the agency.

The assessment team included NEMA staff, members of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and officials from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. Eyewitnesses reported that the flood occurred on Tuesday last week following a heavy downpour.

The statement partly reads: “The incident affected about 10 Local Government Areas of Zamfara State. It submerged houses, brought down walls, and collapsed some residential structures, leaving the victims displaced.

“The affected LGAs include Gadar Baga in Gusau, Zurmi, Kaura-Namoda, Birnin-Magaji, Shinkafi, Bukuyum, Gummi, Anka, and Maru.

“About 10,000 households are displaced, with some currently taking shelter with relatives and friends.”

The statement added that community members guided the joint assessment team around the affected areas and provided valuable information regarding the flood.
