Sokoto Governor Signs Legislation Limiting Sultan’s Power

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has signed six new laws, including the amended Sokoto Local Government and Chieftaincy Law, which has sparked controversy nationwide.

The new law removes the Sultan’s authority to appoint district and village heads in the state.

During the signing ceremony on Thursday, Aliyu emphasized that the new laws aim to strengthen governance, not to target any individual or group.

“We note with concern the unnecessary tension created by our proposal to amend some of these laws,” Aliyu said. “Some reactions were politically motivated, while others were made without understanding the details and intentions behind the amendments.”

Aliyu explained that laws are enacted and amended to meet the needs of the time and the interests of the governed. He noted that previous administrations had also amended laws to promote peace and development.

“The amended laws are not intended to witch-hunt anyone but to promote good governance and ensure consistency with the nation’s constitution,” he clarified.

The governor also advised Muslim clerics to avoid being used by politicians for their agendas and assured citizens that his administration would continue to listen to their needs.

“If we encounter any law that does not suit the interests of our people, we will not hesitate to replace it,” he added.

Other newly signed laws include the Sokoto State Tenancy Law, Zakkat, and Waqf Law, among others.
