President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers, pending approval from the National Assembly. This proposed increase will replace the current ₦30,000 minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024.
Bayo Onanuga announced the news via his official X handle, @aonanuga, at exactly 3:31 PM, stating, “Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.”
In addition to this significant change, President Tinubu assured that he would explore ways to assist the private sector and sub-national governments in implementing the new minimum wage.
The announcement was made during a meeting held on Thursday in Abuja with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). This meeting marks the second time the parties have convened in the past seven days.
Labour leaders expressed their gratitude towards President Tinubu for this substantial move. Furthermore, the President pledged to address the demands of university unions, promising to use his discretionary powers to resolve issues regarding unpaid salaries for the past four months.
