Zamfara Govt to Domesticate National Gender Policy

Governor Dauda Lawal has announced the Zamfara State Government’s intention to review and domesticate the National Gender Policy to align it with the state’s domestic laws, norms, and cultural beliefs.

In a statement issued to The Spectacles by Suleman Ahmad Tudu, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, said the governor, represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Malam Abubakar Mohammed Nakwada, made this announcement at the Government House in Gusau. This was during a courtesy call by Advocacy Nigeria, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting women’s voices in governance and development, reducing maternal mortality, and advocating for girl-child education.

Nakwada emphasized Governor Lawal’s commitment to improving the state’s healthcare system, which has included declaring a state of emergency in the health sector to reduce maternal mortality rates.

“Governor Dauda Lawal has declared a state of emergency in the health sector. Measures being taken include constructing and reconstructing hospitals, providing state-of-the-art equipment, increasing manpower, and making policy adjustments to enhance healthcare service delivery in the state,” said Nakwada.

He further stated, “His Excellency is very passionate about anything that will bring development to Zamfara state. With the highest level of political will, we will review these policies and develop a well-articulated policy document.”

In her remarks, Honourable Saudatu Sani, Executive Director of Advocacy Nigeria, thanked Governor Dauda Lawal for the audience, noting that this was the first time any governor of Zamfara state had granted them such an opportunity.
