The political landscape in Zamfara State witnessed a significant development today as the committee tasked with reestablishing Senator Marafa’s political group under the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its inaugural meeting in Gusau. This meeting follows an invitation from Senator Marafa on June 30, 2024, in Kaduna.
The newly formed 21-member committee, led by Alhaji Sirajo Garba Maitako, convened to strategize the revival of Marafa’s political structure, which had been temporarily dissolved following a peace deal with Former Governor Abdul’Azeez Yari. This deal, brokered by the APC National Leadership, was intended to unify the party. However, the anticipated dissolution of Yari’s faction did not materialize when Governor Bello Matawalle joined the APC, leading to persistent factionalism and disunity within the party.
The committee underscored the necessity of establishing a robust political group under Senator Marafa’s leadership, citing dissatisfaction with the current leadership’s performance under former governors Matawalle and Yari. The goal is to create a cohesive and strong political presence from the polling unit level to the state level, preventing the party from being dominated by a select few individuals.
In an effort to promote inclusivity and fairness, the committee extended an open invitation to all well-meaning individuals in Zamfara State to join the group. They emphasized that this initiative is not aimed at creating further divisions within the APC but rather at fostering a united front under fair and just leadership.
The meeting concluded with prayers for the restoration of peace in Zamfara State. The committee voiced their frustration over the current APC management’s focus on internal power struggles rather than addressing the pressing issue of insecurity in the state. They lamented that the party has become a tool for serving individual interests, which undermines the peace and stability of Zamfara.
This move by Senator Marafa and his supporters marks a significant step towards reestablishing a formidable political structure in Zamfara State, with the hope of bringing about positive change and stronger leadership within the APC.
