President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor John Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), effective July 24, 2024. Professor Obafunwa succeeds Professor Babatunde Salako, whose tenure ends on July 23, 2024.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu expects Professor Obafunwa to leverage his extensive experience and qualifications to drive NIMR’s research objectives and develop structures for disseminating research findings.
Professor Obafunwa is a renowned expert in Anatomic Pathology, Forensic Pathology, and Forensic Entomology, with a wealth of academic and professional experience in Nigeria, the UK, USA, and the Caribbean. He has held various leadership positions, including former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University and Chief Medical Examiner for Lagos State.
The President has also expressed appreciation to the outgoing Director-General, Professor Babatunde Salako, for his service to the nation and wished him well in his future endeavors.
