Minimum Wage: Presidency Reveals When FG, States, LGs Will Start Paying

The presidency has confirmed that the new national minimum wage will take effect starting April 2024. This announcement came from Dada Olusegun, the Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

In his post, Olusegun revealed that workers would receive two months’ worth of arrears backdated to April 2024. He also confirmed that President Bola Tinubu has formally communicated with the National Assembly, seeking their approval for the new National Minimum Wage bill.

“President Bola Tinubu has written to the House of Representatives, submitting the National Minimum Wage Bill for their consideration. Once enacted, the new minimum wage will be retroactive to April 2024 for federal, state, and local government workers, who will receive arrears of their increased wages from this period,” Olusegun stated.

Earlier reports indicated that President Tinubu had dispatched the new national minimum wage bill to the National Assembly for their review and approval. The President’s letter was read during a House of Representatives plenary session on Tuesday, with a corresponding letter presented in the Senate.

This legislative move follows President Tinubu’s recent approval of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers. The proposed increase is part of the administration’s efforts to improve the living standards of public sector employees across all levels of government.
